Kenja's Newsletter & Updates

Volume 2/ Edition 14

September 10, 2000

Hello again everybody

Welcome to another edition of Kenja's Newsletter & Updates.

Well the time has finally come, and we are now officially back to the regular schedule. Hope everyone had a good summer and everyone in the USA had an enjoyable Labor Day holiday. My summer was filled with lots of work and planning. I am still behind on a lot of things but slowly catching up. *smile*

Site Related News:

Over the next few weeks I will post 45 new desktop themes, covering all categories, to the website. The adult fantasy section has not yet been started... it is taking much longer than I had hoped, but I will ease into that as well.... so hang in there. *smile*

Stationery for the Native American section is completed with 20 new sets, and a new section with Angels will be added by the end of next week. Please remember that everything found in the categorized section are the full stationery sets in exe format. The alphabetical sections contain bordered backgrounds (these are only graphics), which may be used in various email programs and/or as web graphics.

Halloween 2000 Ghost Story and Recipe Contest:

Since the newsletter has entered its second year, I thought it might be fun to have a contest. If participation turns out well, we can hold another one around Christmas time and on other occasions next year as well. *smile*

So, let me tell you about the rules and the prizes:

  • Submit either:
    1. A ghoulish Halloween Recipe (food must be edible)
    2. Or a Ghost Story that is between 500 to 1000 words.
  • Rules:
    1. Submission deadline is October 15, 2000 (no exceptions)
    2. You must be at least 18 years old to enter the Contest.
    3. Both, the Ghost Story and Halloween Recipe will be judged on originality and fun factor.
    4. The finished result of the Recipe should make it unmistakably identifiable as Halloween (fun and/or scary).
    5. You may accompany the recipe with a picture of the finished product. (Just in case the judges get confused)
    6. Copying and submitting a recipe from within the Haunted House will get you disqualified from the Contest!
    7. Submit stories only in plain Text or Word format.
    8. One entry per household.
    9. In the event of low participation (one or two entries total), than those entries will automatically receive the 1st Prize, and all other prize offers will be considered forfeited.
    10. In the event of just Recipe entries or just Ghost Story entries, there will only be one prize each (1 st and 2 nd prize) and all other prizes will be considered forfeited.
    11. Winners notification and Prizes will be delivered by email within a few days of final decision by judges.
    12. All decisions of Winners and Prizes are final!
  • Prizes:
    1. 1st Prize for Ghost Story and Recipe each will receive a $25.- Gift Certificate from Amazon.com
    2. 2nd Prize for Ghost Story and Recipe each will receive a $10.- Gift Certificate from Amazon.com.
Winners will be announced in the October 23, 2000 newsletter issue and each winning entry gets a listing in the Haunted House just in time for Halloween!

Help wanted for Special Project:

Still looking for help with one of my special projects. Please click here for the type of help needed and contact information.

* NOTE*   I use Zip Magic to compress Stationery and/or Desktop Theme files into EXE format. If you ever get a password prompt during installation... ignore it and proceed. They are not password protected! For more installation help visit either the Stationery Help, Theme Help, the Hotbar Skin Tutorial, or the WinAmp Skin sections.

The Gift(s):

Please make note that the gifts are only for actual subscribers to this newsletter and not for visitors to the archive copies based on the net. Gifts are available for a limited time with each issue, roughly about 7 days and will then be removed... so get 'em while you can!

Tips & Tricks - Font Problems:

Last issue I had listed several sites that offered TTF (True Type Fonts). Many of you had a ball downloading fonts, but then discovered some display issues when you applied them to email messages etc. A font installed and applied on your PC (i.e. email message, web page, text documents, etc.) will only display correctly on someone else's PC if they too have the same font installed. If the font that you applied is not installed on the recipients PC, it will automatically display either their default font or the most commonly used font on everyone's PC, which is Arial.

*NOTE* At the time of publication, all URL listed in this newsletter are working. Please keep in mind that if a URL does not work, it may be due to an increase in traffic or other temporary causes I have no control over. Try them again at a later time.

Java - Scripts and Applets:

I have been getting a lot of requests from people about certain Java Scripts and/or Applets. There are probably many other people who would like to know where to find these Scripts and Applets on the WWW. Please keep in mind that you will need a basic understanding of HTML to insert Scripts and/or to adjust Java Applets properties. Not all sites listed here provide Wizards and/or detailed instructions:

  • Java Script City has a large variety of free Java scripts and some links to other sites that offer free Java tutorials. The samples, description, and instructions are easy to follow and should make inserting Java scripts a snap, even for beginners.

  • CodeBrain is another great source for free Java Applet kits, Java Scripts, Java sounds in AU format (you can use these for buttons, mouse-over effects, etc.) and much more. Just be aware that not everything offered here is free. Some Applets and Perl Scripts are for sale and/or you are required to purchase a site license to use them.

  • Java Web Spigots offers some awesome free Java Applets. Among the findings here are the ever popular Lake applet, various Menu applets, other special effect applets like Fire and of course game applets. They also offer the Snow Applet (popular for winter and/or holiday pages) which includes the Snow Wizard, that enables you to configure your applet online with ease.

  • FreewareJava.com offers as the name of the site suggests, free Java Applets, Java Scripts, Java Tutorials, links to other sites and books on the subject. The Java Applet section has 705 listings that are then sorted into sub-categories.

  • Also try Web Abstraction for a huge variety of Java Scripts. Here you will find everything you could think of, including menus, roll-overs, image effects, rotating banners, counters, fun scripts, etc. The instructions are easy enough to understand with a basic knowledge of HTML.

  • Jerry's Fun Stuff offers a nice variety of things at his homepage. Not only will you find some nice Java Applets (includes how to use the Lake applet with Stationery), but also some nice Stationery, DHTML Scripts, Java Scripts and some free programs. I had not been to his site in a long time, but he did a real nice job updating his site... worth a visit. *smile*

  • Virtual Max Homepage also offers a nice variety o f Applets and Scripts. Check out his Java menu... nicely done and a great visual effect. If you are new to Scripts and Applets, make sure to check out his Help section, it is very easy to follow and detailed.

  • Free Java Script Learning Center is designed for those who really want to get 'deep and dirty' with Java Scripts. You will find step-by-step instructions and lessons to teach beginners how to write their own Java Scripts. Great site and of course it is free... all you need is time. *smile*

On the Lighter Side of Life -:)

Instead of a joke I would like to share two very nice poems with you, submitted and written by Anne Leach. She is a Native American Visionary, who's Native American ancestors tell her these stories and she puts them into poetry. I hope you enjoy these poems as much as I:

The Peace Maker

Blow, blow beautiful wind like you carry peace in your heart
Blow all across the Indian land into the souls of all the Indian Braves
Then blow from the mountain tops to the bottom of the valleys
Blow that wind of peace into everyone's hearts and souls
Maybe that peace of heart will settle their dust
Bring love to the many different tribes of man
No matter what color of skin, of blood
Or the color of the ground beneath their feet
Blow your wind until you see them all sleeping under the same moon light
Under the same star lit night
Then someday you'll go down in the history books as the Peace Maker of all man kind.

Eagles

Where did all the Eagles go
The ones that soared across the sky
Soaring from mountain tops to here
Then back again
They soared the skys when the Indians lived near by
When the Indians left, did the Eagles go too
Where did all the Indians go
The ones that lived here so long ago
Where did they all go
Did they all go to the Great Beyond
That's past the horizon
Wonder if the Eagles followed them there
Soaring above their heads
Protecting them as they traveled their long journey home?
